Applicants select one of four domains of study—Ecologies, Narratives, Publics, and Mediums—and undertake a core set of courses, including research methods and related topical courses. Following that domain foundation, each student then forges an individualized trajectory, leveraging course offerings across the GSD, as well as other schools and departments at Harvard. During their fourth semester, MDes students from all four domains come together to focus on collaborative advanced research in the form of open projects, in which their expertise finds application on a current issue. Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in order to apply.

The graduate suite also features wall-to-wall whiteboards, 50-inch video monitors, dynamic screen-sharing technologies, and teleconference abilities. Bring your thesis project to fruition by synthesizing your discoveries and disseminating valuable insights that have the potential to benefit others. Take advantage of electives to cultivate your expertise in design for interaction, and design for services or social innovation.

Online graduate programs meet the needs of emerging and working professionals.
As a student in our MA program, you’ll have opportunities to pursue innovative, multidisciplinary research opportunities with faculty. In addition, if time permits, you may also take courses across campus to broaden and deepen your education. The university offers a full range of academic departments; extensive libraries including the Rutgers Art Library; and interdisciplinary units such as the Institute for Research on Women and the Rutgers Center for Cultural Analysis. Students develop individualized research agendas and courses of study that draw upon the University of Washington’s broad academic community.
M.A. in Design: Creative Project
The program is situated in the Civic Square Building which houses computer labs, design classrooms, lighting studios, project spaces, and a 4,200-square foot-art gallery. Located in the center of campus, the I School is a graduate research and education community committed to expanding access to information and to improving its usability, reliability, and credibility while preserving security and privacy. This requires the insights of scholars from diverse fields — information and computer science, design, social sciences, management, law, and policy. Rather than shy away from ill-defined situations, our graduate programs face them head-on. You’ll employ processes that enable you to confidently navigate open-ended challenges and design comprehensive approaches to improve living conditions in thoughtful and meaningful ways. We are pleased to announce that the School of Design is now part of the Western Regional Graduate Program (WRGP) which enables students in 16 Western states and territories to enroll in participating public graduate programs as nonresidents, yet pay the lower resident tuition rate.
Graduate Program: Design Media Arts
Upon completion of the mentorship, students become eligible for teaching assignments as Lecturers. The US government grants a STEM OPT (Optional Practical Training) extension of 24 months for F-1 students who have completed a STEM degree and meet the other eligibility requirements. For details on the 24-Month STEM Extension and the latest OPT updates, visit Rutgers Global.

We recognize that it is important for the field of design to evolve in alignment with the needs of society and technological advancements. Therefore, we continually strive to develop and integrate the study of emerging tools and practices into our graduate curricula. Several of our courses explore user-experience, user-interface, augmented reality, virtual reality, extended reality, embodied interfaces, and conversational design as a means of developing forward-thinking design concepts. Our program will also help you hone skills that are critical to the advanced practice of design such as reading, writing, presentation, conversation, collaboration, critique, crafting, and iteration.
The thesis is complemented by a required second-year seminar, elective coursework in the School of Design, and other departments across the Carnegie Mellon campus. In the second year, you'll conduct intensive research that aligns with an appropriate design process and culminates in a design project that addresses your research question. Throughout the process you’ll participate in public sharing sessions of thesis work and give and receive feedback to further your inquiry and understanding. You can peruse master’s theses from students in the School of Design online at KiltHub. Spanning two semesters over one year, the MA program introduces you to foundational design principles, approaches, theories, and tools that are essential to designing for interactions. Each semester comprises thoughtfully aligned seminars, studios, and labs that equip you with important knowledge and skills to effectively and ethically practice design.
Spring Semester, Year 2
In addition, if you are an international student who seeks employment in the United States post-graduation, the STEM designation of our master’s programs may improve your opportunities. Whatever your focus, we are confident that our graduate programs will prepare you for entry into top jobs at leading companies and organizations. They will also help you become a leader in the field, developing innovative design approaches to contemporary challenges with future generations in mind. The Master of Fine Arts in Media Arts is a rigorous three-year program that focuses on each individual's personal and creative development within the context of media arts. Each student works toward an individual thesis project that incorporates research and theoretical exploration of a topic of their choice, with the goal of producing a refined body of work that culminates in an MFA exhibition.
The School of Design is composed of faculty, students, and staff who chose to relocate to Pittsburgh from around the world to live, work, and learn. We appreciate and welcome the diverse cultural practices that members infuse into our community. Not only does this diversity deepen everyone’s understanding of the world, but it also strengthens us as designers. GPD supports Berkeley’s students throughout their graduate studies as they develop skills and competencies sought by employers in a wide range of fields.

Organized geographically, the Garden features 9 regions of naturalistic plantings from around the world, including a major collection of California native plants. The Garden was established in 1890 and this living collection provides invaluable resources for international research and conservation, as well as a beautiful place of tranquility. A consortium of the natural history collections and field reserves at the University of California, Berkeley, they represent the integration of historic biological and cultural repositories and cutting edge informatics and research. Together, the six natural history museum collections represent over 12 million voucher specimens in anthropology, botany, entomology, herpetology, mammalogy, ornithology, and paleontology.
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is at a critical juncture in its efforts to push its Peter Zumthor-designed building project closer to the finish line. The deal isn’t a jackpot for L.A., which has long been promised its own satellites. The Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) acknowledges it is located on traditional, ancestral, and contemporary lands of Indigenous people.
The MAD program encourages students to explore both the material and experiential nature of the integration between these two mediums. The Master of Art + Design program promotes the highest level of research, resulting in proven innovation that informs emerging media platforms and product development. Graduate students interested in gaining teaching experience can do so via a for-credit, semester-long teaching mentorship under faculty supervision.
You may submit your portfolio of up to 20 pages maximum and 20MB total PDF file size. Portfolios that are submitted in excess of this page and size restriction will not be reviewed by the admissions committee. Any URLs or links to outside materials within your portfolio or elsewhere in your application will not be reviewed. You may optionally include up to two minutes of additional time-based media (audio/video). The third year curriculum is centered on focus, and honing each student's individual or collaborative practice; and is designed to support the development and completion of a thesis project and finalizing the written thesis paper. The curriculum in the third year is more loose and shifted more towards critique and independent work through one on one tutorials.
Most of our students have undergraduate training in a design-related field and several years of successful professional experience. We occasionally admit students from other disciplines who show exceptional design potential. For these students, we offer a three-year course of study that emphasizes mastery of core design skills while pursuing graduate-level study. The portfolio submitted to the Department along with the application package is the most critical element in the review for admission. Its purpose is to reveal the creative potential, breadth of experience, and discipline sophistication of the applicant. Review of your past work in conjunction with information gleaned from your essay of intent, allows the Faculty admissions committee to discern your aptitude for art and design work and readiness for graduate level.
